Discover the possibilities of listening. What dimensions, movements and scopes does it offer?

How can you not only move on sound, but also be moved by it? How can you, as a performer, play in a space with, in, through and around sound? How can an auditory imagination and a dynamic, physical, spatial approach to sound help convey and enhance your story?

It’s not about music or about the words we speak. By sound we mean resonances, vibrations and silences.

This masterclass is not a sound engineering course. What we do is explore the choreography of sound and the scenography of listening in an artistic way.

Through exercises such as ‘a listening improvisation’ and ‘compositional listening’ you will discover how your body reflects, filters and absorbs sound. Equipped with a portable speaker, it even becomes a composing instrument, allowing sound to bounce, bounce, swing or reverberate in space…

Together we reflect on the choreography of the sound and the scenography of the listening, an approach that will inevitably also see the visual aspects of your work in a different perspective.

Stijn Dickel

After his studies in philosophy and mixed media, Stijn Dickel (1974) worked as a musician-performer for a number of years with Jan Fabre/Troubleyn. He also created sound compositions and concepts for dance, theatre, circus and documentary (eg at fABULEUS, Kopergietery, Campo, Ben Benaouisse, Grensgeval,….).

He played as a musician with Kaboom Karavan and Inwolves. Today he forms the improv duo Elms Willdick with Karen Willems.
