ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

Today is inspired by the happenings of the 1960s: structured yet unrehearsed actions that allow room for spontaneity. Side-Show uses this form to create a shared experience with a diverse audience. The happening takes place in a familiar setting: a picnic. The audience sits on a large picnic blanket, chats, and listens to piano music while circus artists perform actions based on their own practice. The format provides guidance: pre-described scores and openness to surprise create a relaxed atmosphere. Today blurs the boundaries between theater and real life, allowing the audience and performers to share a spontaneous experience together.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Quintijn and Aline meet at ESAC Brussels, where Aline designs costumes for several graduation projects. Sharing a fascination for the traces that movement leaves behind, they establish the company Side-Show together in 2009. Their performances Wonders (2013), Spiegel im Spiegel (2017), Sho-Ichidô (2018), and Portraits (2021) are characterized by strong visual power. Shared artistic research plays a significant role, as seen in Permanent Laboratory: From A to B, a series of 10 residencies (2015-2016) with artists from dance, theater, circus, and visual arts. The goal: to develop a unique physical language in which the body is both object and subject. Quintijn and Aline are not only a company but also a family—their fusion of life and work is central to their artistic themes.
