“There is an aesthetic dimension in politics and there is a political dimension in art. Artistic practices play a role in constructing and maintaining a certain symbolic order, or in challenging it, and therefore have necessarily a political dimension."
About the project
Inspired by this quote, we want to open the creation to multiple opinions, both from the artists and the public. Leaving room for “the full range of human emotions”, as Jackie Smart talks about it in her essay on the collaborative creative process. This is how we want to work on a porous dramaturgy. That is to say the writing of a structure where we leave room for the public to co-write and direct the show with us.
This structure will allow us to create a proximity between the artists and the public. Our local circus wishes to thwart the codes and borders between the spectator and the artists in action. Proximity is our response to current events in our world. We see it as a necessity, an antidote. It was already lacking in society long before the pandemic, and it has declined further since. The local circus will be the royal way to create a unique relationship with the public, and offer them a sensory glimpse of the circus by engaging them physically, during moments carefully chosen and elaborated in order to make the experience as sweet as real.
On stage, we will talk about taboos, intimacy and humble circus. With certainty, the artists on stage want to talk, to make people talk but also to listen, in a spirit of constant interaction, to what the public will have to say in the present moment by having the space to do so.
The festive energy specific to the transgression of taboos will be at the center of the dynamics of the show. Proximity will be the heart of this participative and intimate creation.
